    Gamergirl by Mari Mancusi

After her parents’ divorce, Maddy Starr leaves Boston to live with her grandmother in the suburbs. Starting over at a new school is always tough when you’re fifteen. It’s harder when your new school is full of poster children for Abercrombie and Fitch and your outfit of choice comes from Hot Topic. To make matters worse, Maddy’s first day at her new school is marred by having to wear a unicorn sweatshirt, her grandmother escorting her to the front office, and that same grandmother embarrassing the school’s quarterback by recounting an embarrassing childhood incident. Branded “Freak Girl” by the in-crowd, resulting in becoming a social pariah, Maddy loses herself in the online gaming world, Fields of Fantasy. Too bad her real life can’t be as perfect.

This was one of the best book’s i’ve read. Hope you enjoy it!

    Go Ask Alice by Anonymous

Go Ask Alice is a good book. It is about a girl that gets addicted to drugs. She starts with her friends. Then the effect of the drug is not strong enough for her that she moves onto another drug. She gets clean at one point but then she can not take it any longer and she goes back to doing drugs. The book is written like a diary. Every day she writes a paragraph and some days she writes a sentence. I recommend the book a lot. It is really interesting book.

“A Study In Scarlet”–Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
A book I enjoyed reading in the Jackson library was “A Study in Scarlet” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This is the first Sherlock Holmes book written by Arthur Conan Doyle and tells of how Dr. John Watson, an army doctor returning from Afghanistan to London, meets Sherlock Holmes, the only consulting detective in the world with an amazing deductive mind, and how they came to live at 221B Baker St. This story is told from the view of Dr. Watson who is fascinated by Holmes way of deduction as they solve the murder of Enoch Drebber. If you are a lover of mysteries this is the right book for you.

By the Sword, book one, by Sanami Matoh

One day a Karinin, someone who hunts demons for money, named Asagi meets a girl named Kaede and her father, the small fire demon Kurenai. These two strangers possess a magical sword called the moegi, a sword only Kurenai’s nephew can draw. While talking to the father and daughter, a frog demon attacks them, having broken his sword earlier and desperate, Asagi draws the moegi and kills the demon. But before, he learns why Kurenai is so tiny; (he is like a foot tall) his soul was sealed inside the moegi, and once it is drawn he will be free. After, they learn they need his body to return him to normal, so they set off to find it. This book is okay, I would reccomend it to people who like violent, Naruto like books

    The Notebook: By Nicolas Sparks

It was a good book, its one of my favorite. It’s about two Teenagers who meet each other in the summer and the girl has to leave town.
Once summer was over the girl goes to college and then gets married to a lawyer. She met him while she was working part time as a nurse. The boy spent his life going to military and building a house.
The girl was eating breakfast and read the newspaper and on the first page there was a picture of the boy, he had finally finished building the house he was working on for a long time. The girl then decides to go find him. Then she divorces her husband and gets back together with the boy and they grow old together.

I just read 11 Birthdays by Wendy Mass. Its about 2 kids, Amanda and Leo, and they’ve had they’re birthday partys together every year since they were born. On their tenth birthday, they have sort of a fight and don’t talk for a year, until on their 11th birthday, they end up celebrating seperatley. but something happens: their 11th birthday just repeats over and over and over again. It is an amazing book, but i would recomend it to younger readers, maybe 6th grade. Or if you’re older and just looking for a quick fun read.-Addison, 7th grade, Ms Nelson’s class.

    Cut

Normally, a book about an ‘emo’ girl would be stereotypical, but after I read the first chapter I couldn’t put it down. The book itself had an interesting view from an emoitionally unstable girl who was put into a ‘mental help’ hospital for she was cutting. I thought, just from the title, it wouldn’t be all that great. But, since I’ve had more of a backround with people cutting, it let me take a look into what they might be going through. I highly respect the author for this book was simply amazing. It has become one of my favorites and it has opened my eyes more to this subject.

Staying Fat For Sara Byrnes by Chris Crutcher, is a great book and very inspiring. It shows the true meaning of friendship, and the reality of highschool bad and good. It inspires me to be a better friend and go to great lengths to be there for a friend and stick up for kids who get bullied I would recomend this short story to anyone, who is a bi-stander watching someone get bullied, because kids who stand and watch the act have the most power, and the most power to change that. This shows the truth about teenage problems, and I think it teaches a great lesson

I just finished reading a book titled “Summer of My German Soldier”, by Bette Greene. It is your classic story of forbidden love, and choosing whether to be loyal to your heart or loyal to your country and family. The book follows Patty Bergen through one unforgettable summer. She is a young Jewish girl growing up in rural Jenkinsville, Arkansas, where a number of German POWs have been sent to a labor camp. This is the story of an unlikely friendship between Patty and one of the soldiers. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a book about a teenage girl who is trying to seem normal under the stress of keeping a secret that could ruin her life and her family’s lives. It is a fantastic book.

Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers

Fallen Angels is a book about the struggle of a 17 year old boy, Perrey, and his adventures in the Vietnam War. Perrey is a shy kid from Harlem, New York, that singed up for Vietnam because he couldn’t afford college. Along his journeys, Perrey builds up friendships with other soldiers that are in his squad, and that squad becomes his family.

Fallen angels is a very rewarding novel, it sends of a good message about the struggles of the war and all of the difficult hardships that many U.S. soldiers have had to face. I would only recommend this book to a stronger reader because it has some difficult language. Also, reader discresion is advised because of several “descriptive parts” and obscene language.

Over all I would rate this book a 9/10 because i really enjoyed the story that was told through out the book.

Overall, I didn’t like 145th Street Stories as much as I thought I would. It didn’t have very consistent themes and the stories really jumped around. There wasn’t a main character to follow throughout the book and it would alternate between 1st and 3rd person a lot. In the ending story “Block Party” I had to constantly refer back to the beginning stories like “Big Joes Funeral” and “The Fighter” to remember the details and themes that came with their stories. I liked some of the stories like “The Streak” and “Big Joes Funeral” but I didn’t find the whole book as satisfying as I’d hoped. I feel like I have much more to learn about 145th Street and this book covered up the cold truth about it.

The book i read was; Summer of my German soldier. It is about a teenage (Jewish) girl who befriends a German Prisoner of war. I ended up really liking this book. At first i didn’t really like it because it took a long time to get into the ‘action’ part of the book but once it picked up i started really liking it. I enjoyed this book for a number of reasons. Firstly it just had a good plot and was really enjoyable and entertaining in that way. Also the way the author wrote the book i felt like i really knew the people, so a combination of good plot + good characters made me really want to keep reading. Also i thought watching the main themes( social boundaries and odd relationships) play out trough out the book was really interesting.
Sort of as a side note, i think it was really well written and the author captured the time period, characters and main events really well.

I read the book scorpions. The book was pretty good. It was interesting to read, but i wouldn’t recommend the book for younger people. Or maybe you could you would just have to be mature about it. In the book its about gang violence, Jamaal(the main character) his best friend, and family. Jamaal’s brother goes to prison at 17 and Jamaal, his sister, and mother are doing there best to keep it together and help his brother out. Meanwhile Jamaal’s dealing with his own personal issues on the side that Jammal’s brother has left him to take care of. The ending left of kind of at a point were we want to keep reading, it didn’t answer all the questions and kind of left the book at a mystery.

This time was during WWll. I like this book because it has good characters and has a good conflict. Also it has good history about the war in the Pacific. This story need’s to be red by all of the reader’s in school’s because history must keep moving in the future.

This is a book about a guy named Ben. Who is paid by a guy named Medec to guide him on a bighorn sheep hunt. When Medec accidentally killed a man things start to get interesting. Ben does not accept Medec’s bribe not to tell anyone about the shooting he makes Ben strip down to his underwear and sends him out into the desert without food or water. The whole book is about Ben surviving the desert while being hunted by Medec. I think that it was the type of book that you had to read through it in one sitting. I didn’t do that but I did it in three. This book had a good twist at the end which completely surprised me and that it showed a lot about Ben’s character which I question throughout the book.

My name is Gabe N, in Mr. Molloy’s second and sixth period class, and I read Slaughter House 5, by Kurt Vonnegut. Now this book is weird. If you like weird, then you like Kurt Vonnegut. If you like time travel then you will love Slaughter House 5. If you don’t mind hearing “So it goes,” many times, then you will probably enjoy this book. This book takes you to so many different places in Billy Pilgrim’s lifetime. He is a man (or boy, depending where he has time traveled to.) who is unstuck in time, which means he will occasionally travel to a different part of his life. It also takes you through a stressful part of world war 2, that Billy experienced Dresden, and other parts of the world, where he experiences many deaths, and yet his personality stays with him through the whole book.

    Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes:
Chris Crutcher creates a book that takes on serious issues while having a hilarious way of presenting them. In this book, you see the story from the perspective of Eric Calhoune, who is a fat kid, the main character of the book. He tries to help his best friend Sarah Byrnes, probably his best friend, by finding out how she got burned when she was young, but she doesn’t really want to tell him what happened. Chris Crutchers ability to create a book with a balance of humor and seriousness is phenominal. This is a great book!

This book is by Walter Dean Myers, and it is a jumble of personal stories about life on 145th street. This book is a pretty intense, and i wouldn’t suggest this book to anybody under the grade 7, I’ve learned that there are more important things in life other than just yourself, and that you should be gracious of what you have and help people that have less than you. I finished reading the book “Scorpions” By: Walter Dean Myers. I really enjoyed the book because I felt that it related to us teenagers in many ways. The main character Jamal goes through a lot of peer pressure and has to make life changing decisions. Today many of us are making decisions and having the influence of peer pressure. I think another thing about this book is it shows how brave one person can be even if they don’t have a lot of support. The book itself is pretty short, but teaches some very good lessons. This book speaks a lesson of what living in hard times is like. Jamal has a rough family and has to be courageous and step up to make his own choices. The characters all have unique personalities and have different views on the problems going on.

    Hello there!
I just finished reading “Summer of My German Soldier”. It’s set around the time of the holocaust in rural America. It’s not your typical story. Patty, the daughter of a store owner, meets Anton, a POW (Prisoner of War) soldier. Quickly they become great friends. When Anton escapes the prison camp Patty takes him in and hides him in her families garage. This book is filled with drama, life lessons, and suspense. Patty only has one friend (her maid Ruth) before Anton comes. She isn’t your average 12 year old. At first I thought that by the way she thought and spoke was that she was at least in her teens. As the book progesses it doesn’t change, but you can see her innocence in places.
At first the book is a little slow, but trust me,once it gets good, you can’t stop reading!

    145th Street Short Stories:

145th Street Short Stories are a collection of short stories set in Harlem. They deal with the events that often happen in tough neighborhoods like drugs and police shootings, but also the lighter side of these neighborhoods and they kindness of the people that inhabit them.

The 145th Street Stories were both enjoyable and not. While I very mush enjoyed some of the stories, I didn’t really like others. None of the stories were told by the same person, and they even switched between 1st and 3rd person. This was both a strength and a waekness, because if there was a few stories that you didn’t like, you likely enjoyed others. However, I doubt that anyone read the book and liked every single story. Some were dead serious and kind of dark while others were lighthearted and funny.

I would rate this book a 7 on a scale of 1-10 because it had some strong stories with unique voices, but had too many stories that were written completely differently. I would recomend this book to anyone thatenjoys realistic fiction about people in tough situations and people who like short story collections with alot of variety.

Scorpions By: Walter Dean Myers is a great book. The book has very good character development and is a book that is filled with action, mystery, supense, and drama. The book is not too long and sort of short, but the books scenes all have lots of meanings so every word counts. Almost any body can read this book, the story isn’t to hard to understand and it has not very many challenging vocabulary. The book is about a boy named Jamal who ‘s brother is in the prison. Him and his mother are trying to get mony for his case to be appealed. He lives at home with his sister Sassy and goes through many adventures with Tito who is practically his brother. The big conflict in this book is with a gang who’s named is “Scorpions” and they are invloved in many scenes. This book really showed how diffficult some people’s lifes are and how everybody has their own ways to solve their problems. This is a good book and I ecommend it for anybody who wants to read a thrilling story for fun without being challenged.

I liked this book because it keeps you on your toes wondering what has happened to this poor girl and it is so funny! The humor is great from Chris Crutcher and I really loved the style he wrote. Even though I am a big fantasy book fan, I really loved this book and it’s definitely one of my favorites now. I think it makes you think a lot and create theories–which is one of my favorite things to do when reading books. This book is very well written and it takes you right into Eric Calhoune’s head and how he feels about what’s going on with Sarah and why shes in the hospital. And for that, I am greatfull because I can’t imagine being inside her mind throughout this book and to be in even more scenes with her father….Anyway, it is a great book and I recommend it highly. Very realistic.

I finished reading “Fallen Angels” last week, a great book written by Walter Dean Myers. This book overall is a little bit challenging and has a new vocabulary involving war related terms and abbreviations. I would suggest it for more of an advanced reader, this is not a fun easy read, it’s a fun rewarding read.
“Fallen Angels” is a book about friendship and how war can shape the way you act towards others. It describes how being in such an overwhelmingly difficult atmosphere makes you realize and appreciate what you have and you need to have steady relationships to get out of Vietnam alive. The friendships we see in this book are from Perry – the main characters – point of view. Perry himself goes through challenges dealing with his home life and how his life will change when he gets back, but on top of that stress he has to go through mental reassuring’s to get used to the war. Even though, how could anyone possibly get used to people falling dead at your side?
Not only is this book about making and keeping friendships, it’s about the sacrifices you have to make to save one another, or giving up peace at camp and risking your life for your country. There are many emotional twists in this thriller of a story, I really recommend it for anyone that wants a great read!

(Okay this is the real comment) please ignore the last one.

Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes by: Chris Crutcher

This book was a realistic fiction book, that no one would ever hope it left the fiction category, or was based on truth. I have met the author and this story is based on truth. Sarah Byrnes is a teen who was badly burned as a young child and has an abusive family. She doesn’t really have friends, except Eric Calhoune, who is fat, so they have things in common, they don’t fit in with the rest of society. Eric starts shedding a few pounds in his swim class and Sarah is angered Eric can overcome his problems and his appearance and she can’t. Eric fights to keep in touch with Sarah, but things get harder for her at home, and she is so hurt mentally and physically. She needs to let others into her life and get help. The storyline is harsh, cruel, and all, but the author weaves in hints of humor which is so relieving and gives a small break to it. The book really is a great one, with outstanding characters (my favorite is Eric’s swim instructor and you should find out why).
The friendship and devotion found in this book is amazing and is the heart and soul to this dark, cruel story, the purpose of helping a hurt one.

“Fallen Angels” by Walter Dean Myers

This novel takes place in Vietnam during the war. The main character is a young soldier named Perry who the reader can easily connect with. Perry not only struggles with the hardships of war, but matures a great deal and makes lasting friendships with his squad members. Especially with one hilarious character named Peewee. This book is suspenseful and exciting during the action scenes of war, yet thoughtful and illustrates the impact of war on soldiers. The author has fought in a war himself and really captures the experience well. This book is really good and the last action scene is very exciting and nerve wracking. You feel as if you are in the fight alongside Peewee, Perry and the rest of the squad.

    Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes:
This book was really good, and had an awesome message. The book broke down stereotypes and gave you a glimpse inside the head of a few people who had thoughts you would never expect. It really proved that we’re all human, and no one is perfect. It also showed that life isn’t fair, and that not trusting anyone can be unhealthy, but letting them in is hard. This book was sad, but it had a good ending. I think that the mystery behind Sarah Byrnes, and how they didn’t tell you what actually happened to her until halfway through the book, kept you from putting the book down, and gave you something to keep reading for. All in all, it was a powerful book, that really made you think.

Summer of My German Soldier is a great book. It involves a young Jewish girl, Patty, living in a small town with her cruel, unloving parents, and an escaped German POW (Prisoner of War.) She keeps him safe, in her hideout after he escapes from prison camp. The two of them turn out to be unlikely friend, a jewish girl keeping a former Nazi safe in her own home. Patty has many different relationships with everyone in her life. Her friends treat her with love and care. And her parents are cruel and mean. It is interesting to follow all these different friendships she has with people and how they turn out. It is a great story about friendship, family, sacrifice and love. I really enjoyed it. The plot took many different twists and turns. It was exciting and interesting. I would recommend it to people who like books with strong friendships and exciting plots. I think mostly everyone could enjoy it, though.

I just recently read the novel “The Summer of my German Soldier” that was packed with family drama, history, and a forbidden love. Not all may say they liked this book, due to the racism, abuse, and vulgar words that are said. This book is definitely not for elementary school kids nor for kids under 12. Not all kids are able to grasp the fact that in the little towns in the south, there was much cruelty and racism back in the 1950′s. I liked this book, but didn’t love it. I thought the plot was really intense but a bit unrealistic just because Patty was 12 and this soldier she falls in love with is in his twenties. Overall the book kept me interested and I would recommend reading it.
The story takes place in Jenkinsville, Arkansas near a POW camp for German soldiers that were held as prisoners during World War 2. Patty (the main character) is a 12 year old Jewish girl that gets insulted by her mother, abused by her father, and tends to keep things to herself, that is until she meets Fredrick Anton Reiker the German Soldier. Their first encounter was at Patty’s fathers General Store as the POW prisoners bought straw hats for when they worked in the fields. Patty found herself interested in Anton as he spoke to her in fluent English about what things he would would like to purchase. Soon after that Anton escapes the prison and ends up being sheltered by Patty. They get to know eachother, and soon Patty is in love with Anton as she provides food and a roof over his head for him. Not only is Patty lying to her parents about hiding this German Soldier but Ruth, their nanny, knows about the hidden Nazi. After the months spent with Anton, Patty becomes deeply intrigued in him and why he isn’t supporting Hitler’s decisions throughout the war. Anton soon decides that he must travel on and find his family in Germany. Patty is heartbroken once he leaves and thinks life will never be the same, he was the only one she could talk to about anything.
I don’t want to give away the ending, but let’s just say the government finds out about Patty sheltering the escapee, which makes things get pretty crazy. I hope this gives you a little taste of what the book is about, and hopefully you will read it! Thanks!

Patty is a Jewish girl with two parents, who never seem to love her, and a little sister they seem to never get enough of. Living in this small little city with no friends but the house keeper Ruth. And Anton. A German soldier, with a beautiful home in Germany and who is actually against the war and very bright. This impossible story is about the unforgettable story of a summer that changed their lives. When Anton meets Patty in her parents general store their lives are changed forever. But the question is; Is it for better or worse?

I couldn’t stop reading. But the best part are the surprises. You never know what the effect will be of their smallest actions. And if I were to rate it I would give it a 9 and a big thumbs up!

    The Misfits by James Howe

This is a pretty good book. It is about 4 misfits struggle to make a third party in the school elections. They are trying to fit in and also do what they believe in at the same time. This book is an easy and fast read. I was assigned this book for book groups and wasn’t quite sure about it but now that I’ve read it i would recommend it to lower grades. I think this is a good book for 7th or 6th graders. It was pretty easy to read but it had a good story line.

I read Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes by Chris Crutcher, and thought it was a wonderful book. If you read this book, and aren’t hooked immediately I suggest you keep reading, because for me the book seemed to get better with each page. I thought the strong part of this book was the characters, they are very different from people who I know, and yet Chris Crutcher makes them seem real. Also, this book is for a mature reader, and it has some heavy topics that aren’t discussed in a lot of other teen books. It is a great book if you want something that will make you think, and it is very enriching when you finish.

Diary of a wimpy kid : the ugly truth
    Kinney, Jeff.
New York : Amulet Books, 2010

This book is about a kid who dosen’t fit in all the way
Wimpy Kid Greg and Rowley become ex-best friends. Greg notices that way more is expected of him now. His mom has gone back to school, so he’s got more chores, and dad’s helping with homework, which is no help at all. But there are some perks to getting older, like an all-night, co-ed lock-in at school — that is, until the teachers take away everyone’s electronic gadgets. Not that!

Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy. Fantasy 400 pp.

This book takes place in Ireland. The two main characters are Skulduggery and Serpine who are in conflict with one another. Skulduggery is a skeleton dectective whose ultimate goal is to stop Serpine, an evil sorcerer, from ressurecting the Faceless Ones, who are an ancient race. The characters were interesting and the plot was exciting.

The Last Olympian, by Rick Riordan is definitely one of the best books I’ve ever read. In this conclusion to Percy Jackson and The Olympians, the evil Titan Lord Kronos has mounted an attack on Manhattan and the city of the Gods:Olympus. Percy and his friends are half-bloods, this means that they are half mortal and half ancient Greek god. While the Gods are away battling the massive monster Typhon, Percy, his best friend, Grover the satyr, and his best friend Annabeth must defend Olympus from the relentless Titan army with the help of their demigod comrades and the River Styx.–Ian, 8th grade

This book is about a teen who all his life waited for the day his parents would come back to Mexico and take him with them. On his 16th birthday he gets a card telling him to go to man who will help him cross. As the story unfolds and is on his way to the border, he finds that his younger sister has followed him and now faces two choices, send his sister back to his town and live alone with their aging grandmother or take her with him on this long a dangerouse trip. The Last Apprentice series by Joseph Delaney

This series is one that you would read if you are interested in magic, monsters, etc. After I read the first ten pages I was hooked. The intro itself sucks you into the dark tale by starting you out at an old farm run by Thomas Ward and his family. Thomas is however is a seventh son of a seventh son which enables him to hear and see the dark creatures in his world. that ability is very important to spooks who are the defenders of the light. Thomas then becomes the apprentice of his county spook. Together they will embark on journeys so dangerous that you will find yourself sweating as you read. This book is an easy read that you can find all over the place. Overall i rate this book a 10 and highly reccomend it for all readers.

    SPLIT INFINITY, PIERS ANTHONY

Split infinity, awesome book. Read it a couple years ago. Copyright 1980, it looks like an old book. But it is really a great treasure through the yellow pages. This guy is a serf, like in olden times, but in the future really. He owns nothing, and to the extent that this is a banned book, walks around naked like all the other serfs. In his world the outside world is empty and desolate, you will die within minutes of being outside. Science triumfs and has deadly wonders. The only way to get off was to win the games. Those skilled win by pracite those not prefer luck. gambling.Behind the curtain his beloved robot shows him that there is another world, the same world named proton that he lives on, but swathed in magic and life. “He could survive only by mastering magic, and if he used any magic at all, the werewolf and the unicorn who were his only friends were deternmined to kill him at once!” It’s a series, and mostly not school appropriate! Very well written.

A companion to The Giver. Kira is an orphan, but she has a talent for weaving though she is crippled. The Council of Guardians helps her and gives her a place to live, but she does not trust them. One of my all time favorite books. It gave me a sense of what might happen in the future if we are not careful. A must read if you have not before.

A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libby Bray. Fantasy. 403 pp. YA novel for 8th graders plus.

Gemma’s mother is killed, and Gemma is sent to a boarding school where she falls into a clique of girls and taps into her powerful and dangerous magical powers rooted in an ancient past. The novel captured teen peer pressure dynamics and scared me too! It was beautifully written, and I am eager to read the next volume. It was supposed to be made into a movie, but that fell through.
